Employers need to 'support staff with debt problems'

Employers need to 'support staff with debt problems'

- Wednesday, 19 May 2010

Employers should do what they can to support workers who have debt problems, suggests the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS).

The debt charity believes that employers are in a good position to aid those who need debt help because of unmanageable finances.

They can do this by encouraging staff with financial problems to seek help immediately and to point them in the direction of debt advice.

CCCS noticed an increase in the number of phone calls it received from people seeking debt help in the first quarter of 2010 and believes the problems being experienced by UK consumers are only going to get worse.

Delroy Conrinaldi, external affairs director at CCCS, said: "Help doesn't have to mean speaking to employees individually as those with debt problems are likely to feel very private about their finances and may not reveal that they have a problem, while suggesting staff have a debt problem could be intrusive.

"Instead, employers can help them by providing information on notice boards and in staff magazines that signposts them to where they can get free debt advice and support."

On April 30th CCCS revealed that 93,000 consumers had called its helpline in the first three months of 2010, compared to 69,432 for the same period last year.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19786908-ADNFCR
