EU data charge regulations to reduce debt problems?

EU data charge regulations to reduce debt problems?

- Monday, 5 July 2010

Regulation changes to overseas mobile phone data charges could reduce the number of people suffering from debt problems.

The European Union-wide law change sees a cap placed on the prices mobile phone companies can charge users for using their handsets abroad.

Ceri Stanaway, mobiles expert at Which?, welcomed the change and said that the alteration would prevent people from accidentally running up costly phone bills.

She said: "There have been cases in the past of people unwittingly running up bills of literally thousands of pounds using the internet on their mobile overseas, so it's great that there is now a safety net in place."

However, Which? has warned consumers that they should remain aware that they could still run up large bills when using their phones abroad.

Ms Stanaway went on to say that people should remember that the changes only apply to the European Union. Mobile phone usage outside of the area will still be subject to uncapped charges.

Checking international rates before making phone calls abroad could reduce the charges of people suffering debt problems.
