Expected council tax hike could contribute to debt advice increase

Expected council tax hike could contribute to debt advice increase

- Tuesday, 11 August 2009

Council tax bills could rise over the next few years as Local Government Authorities prepare to make up for recession-related losses in revenue, it has been claimed.

The added cost to the consumer could prove to be 'one bill too many' for some and result in a number of people seeking debt advice in order to cope with the extra outlay.

According to the Local Government Association (LGA), councils in the UK will raise £4 billion less than they did in 2007/08 from property and investments.

To make up for the shortfall, extra money will be raised by increasing the amount generated through a variety of existing levies including parking fines and council tax.

Sir Jeremy Beecham, vice-chairman of the LGA, said that local government was not recession-proof and remained as susceptible to its effects as anyone or anything else.

He said: "Town halls are feeling the effect of recession in exactly the same way as hard pressed homeowners and families."

It was revealed last month that homeowners whose houses boast pleasant view could be charged higher council tax rates for the privilege.
