Families taking holidays during term-time to avoid debt problems

- Tuesday, 31 August 2010

An increasing number of families are choosing to take their children on holiday during term-time in order to reduce costs and the possibility of debt problems.

According to the Department for Education, a total of 1.4 million school days were missed during the spring term of 2010 due to unauthorised family vacations.

Catherine Hanly, associate editor at mumsnet, believes that this will continue due to the price hikes that occur during the summer holidays.

She said: "At a time when household budgets are tighter than ever, this is probably going to be an issue which comes up time and again."

Furthermore, the parenting site found that families were less concerned about taking their children out of school during term if it was a once-in a lifetime trip, Ms Hanly added.

Eighty per cent of those surveyed on the site stated that they were angry that holiday firms put up their prices during the holidays, she said.

Families could be taking their children out of school to go on holiday in order to avoid the inflated prices and subsequent debt problems.
