Free debt management advice 'should come before pawning'

Free debt management advice 'should come before pawning'

- Wednesday, 13 May 2009

Britons have been told to seek debt management counselling before resorting to pawning their possessions if they encounter financial difficulty in the current economic crisis.

A spokesperson for the Money Advice Trust tells the Liverpool Daily Post that free debt management advice is available from a number of organisations nationwide and should be taken advantage of over alternatives such as payday loans and pawn shops.

"We would recommend that individuals explore all other legal sources of cheaper credit [before pawning belongings]," she says.

She adds: "In such situations, individuals would be advised to seek free advice from services such as National Debtline [and] Citizens Advice."

The publication adds that the current economic circumstances have led many members of the public to pawn items in order to provide some short-term cash.

People seeking debt management counselling can do so by emailing Debtfixers or visiting the offices at 45 Clarendon Road, Watford.

Alternatively, free debt management advice is available via the company's helpline on 0800 707 6109.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19166963-ADNFCR
