Fuel poverty persistence could mean more debt problems

Fuel poverty persistence could mean more debt problems

- Tuesday, 30 March 2010

The government is failing to meet its own targets to end fuel poverty, the Energy and Climate Change Committee has revealed.

That could leave some of the most vulnerable of the country's citizens struggling for debt solutions and in urgent need of debt management advice.

By the end of this year the government was to have eradicated fuel poverty – defined as spending more than ten per cent of household income on energy bills – in homes housing the elderly, disabled people or children.

However, the committee predicts that this first goal will be missed and that it is looking increasingly unlikely that the government will be able to eradicate fuel poverty altogether by its cut off date in 2016.

According to the report, 2.8 million households are currently in fuel poverty and further price increases could see almost as many again joining them.

Andy Atkin, Friends of the Earth executive director, told the BBC that action was required to prevent people having to choose between warmth and sustenance.

"The government must introduce a comprehensive nationwide energy efficiency programme that prioritises those most at risk," he explained to the news provider.

Debt problems could persist for many as they struggle to meet the costs of their basic standard of living. Debt advice is available and those struggling with financial difficulties are advised to seek professional debt advice as soon as possible.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19696294-ADNFCR
