High energy bills could lead to need for debt help

High energy bills could lead to need for debt help

- Friday, 19 March 2010

Energy bills are 31 per cent higher than they were in 2008, a study by uSwitch has found.

Price increases could leave some households with debt problems and needing debt management advice.

The average household energy bill stands at £1,191 despite recent price cuts, almost £300 higher than the beginning of 2008.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch, said that consumers were likely to have been hit hard by the costs.

"Households are still struggling to get to grips with the impact of 2008's 42 per cent hike. When this is coupled with the effect of a particularly hard winter you can see why some may be left feeling let down," she said.

The news comes after uSwitch revealed last week that energy debt in the UK now totals £728 million. Some 5.5 million households are in debt to their energy supplier.

These figures make it likely that consumers could seek out debt advice. There are a number of options open to the indebted and it is important to seek out debt help as early as possible if it is needed.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19679084-ADNFCR
