Homeowners urged to prepare for severe weather to avoid debt problems

- Wednesday, 10 November 2010

Householders living in areas that could be flooded should prepare for severe weather as paying to repair the damage may lead to debt problems.

Confused.com has given some tips on how to prepare for severe weather, in particular flooding, as some warnings have been issued by the Environment Agency.

The price comparison site advises consumers to take out adequate home insurance as they can pay for any damage caused by flooding.

If a household does not have insurance they may have to fork out for repairs themselves, which may lead to debt problems.

Gareth Kloet, head of home insurance at the firm, said: "With rain forecast and the run-off from melting snow to contend with, drainage systems and sodden ground could struggle to cope with the quick, unexpected deluge and flooding is a very real risk.

"Making sure adequate home insurance cover is in place is the best way to minimise the impact of any costs incurred getting the house back to its original state."

Consumers have also been advised to move furniture upstairs and to unplug any electronic devices before the floods start.

The Environment Agency has already issued 20 flood warnings for the midlands.
