Households can save £263 a year on gas bills, which may help them become debt-free

Households can save £263 a year on gas bills, which may help them become debt-free

- Tuesday, 9 November 2010

Households can save around £263 a year on their utility bills if they shop around for the best deal, which may help those living with debt problems.

According to moneysupermarket.com, apathy costs Brits around £4 billion a year as they cannot be bothered to look around for the best deals.

The price comparison site found that households can save £263 a year if they went online to find the best tariffs for their gas and electricity.

This money could then help consumers become debt-free if they use it to pay off their debt problems.

Scott Byrom, energy manager at the firm, stated that companies, such as Scottish and Southern Energy, are raising their prices from December 1st.

He said: "The good news is most people can reduce their energy bills significantly. As a nation we are paying nearly £4 billion a year more than we need, because so few people take advantage of the cheapest deals available.

"By swapping on to the best available deal each household could slash their annual energy bill by £263 on average."

This could be an option for the 4.6 million people over 60 who are concerned about being able to afford to heat their homes this winter, research from Age UK found.
