Huhne warns against unknown energy price hikes

Huhne warns against unknown energy price hikes

- Tuesday, 21 September 2010

Chris Huhne, the energy secretary, has stated that the government will step in over hidden energy price hikes, which is good news for those living with debt problems.

Consumers living with debt problems may be concerned about how they will pay their utilities bills if prices increase but Mr Huhne has promised to clamp down on providers who charge their customers unnecessarily.

The energy secretary was speaking at the annual Liberal Democrat Party conference in Liverpool and warned that the practice of imposing hidden costs on customers should be stopped.

He said: "It is outrageous that energy companies have been able to hike up prices without even bothering to tell their customers.

"I can't think of another example where you start paying more for something without being told about it."

Therefore, consumers could be caught unawares by a price hike, which may mean they cannot pay their bills and end up with debt problems.

Ofgem has recently launched an investigation into the misselling of energy by sales people on the doorstep, as consumers may end up switching companies on the spot without being any better off.
