An increasing number of people who have recently suffered bereavement are seeking debt help.

According to the Consumer Credit Counselling Service, it has received more requests for debt help from people struggling to cope with financial matters after the loss of a loved one.

The majority of those turning to this service are those who have recently lost a spouse or partner as some couples are jointly responsible for their financial arrears.

Laura Carver, head of the helpline at the firm, said: "Bereavement is difficult enough but finding that you have to deal with debt makes it that much harder.

"This is particularly so for those who have lost a partner or spouse whose income has been used to maintain debt payments."

She urged consumers to inform their creditors about bereavement as they are likely to be sympathetic.

Another group that seeks debt help after the death of a loved one are those who have lost their parents and need to put their estate in order.

Some other causes of debt include having a new child, divorce or separation, unemployment or the failure of a business.
