'Insufficient' bursary knowledge increasing student debt problems?

'Insufficient' bursary knowledge increasing student debt problems?

- Friday, 4 December 2009

Complication surrounding funding arrangements for higher education is resulting in widespread ignorance among the student community.

That is according to Push.co.uk, the independent student guide site, which suggests that students are not making the most of available financial assistance because of procedural complicatedness.

As such, a number of students could be suffering from debt problems that, with an easier-to-understand bursary programme, might be avoidable.

Johnny Rich, editor of Push.co.uk, said that a lack of student understanding with regards to funding opportunities ran parallel with general financial naivety.

He commented: "Students don't as a rule, understand bursaries. Having said that, there is a much greater awareness of them now than there was three or four years ago, but it is still nowhere near sufficient."

According to the Office for Fair Access, while bursaries are helping to break down the financial barriers of higher education, more needs to be done to improve the impact, awareness and understanding of them.
