Jobs that could counter UK debt issues go to India

Jobs that could counter UK debt issues go to India

- Friday, 31 July 2009

debt advice needs in the UK look set to continue as opportunities to increase employment and stifle the onset of continued debt are overlooked.

In a cost-cutting initiative the British Council has confessed it is to outsource 100 jobs to India.

At the same time, 500 employees in Britain are to be laid off - a move that will not only prevent the counter of advancing debt levels, but contribute to them.

The job-cuts - to be predominantly in IT and finance - are expected to be implemented in the next 18 months and the council hopes to save £45 million.

It is believed this is the first time the council has outsourced its labour requirements overseas.

Martin Davidson, chief executive of the British Council, said: "Our spending power overseas has been hit by the fall in the value of sterling in the last year.

"To ensure that we continue to spend as much of the money we receive from the taxpayer as possible on our programmes abroad, we are cutting our running costs by creating leaner, lighter and more effective administrative and back-office functions."
