Keep valuables hidden from thieves to avoid New Year's debt problems
- Friday, 10 December 2010Consumers have been advised to ensure that their home insurance is up-to date this Christmas as a burglary at this time may lead to
debt problems.
Aviva has warned that households will have more valuables at this time of year and if these are stolen, the family could lose lots of money.
However, if they have home insurance cover they will be able to claim their money back for any laptops, cameras or consoles that are stolen over the festive season.
If a household does not have insurance it may cost a lot to replace the stolen items, which could lead to
debt problems in the long-run.
Rob Townend, director of property claims at the insurance company, said: "Our homes are jam-packed with plenty of expensive gadgets and glamorous gifts at this time of year and of course that means rich pickings for any opportunist thief who might be wandering down your road."
He advised consumers to keep their presents hidden from view and locked away somewhere safe until the big day.
Legal & General recently found that eight out of ten households are planning to spend less this Christmas compared to last year.
