Longer mobile phone contracts could benefit those with debt problems

Longer mobile phone contracts could benefit those with debt problems

- Tuesday, 12 April 2011

Choosing an 18 month-long mobile contract could help Brits currently seeking debt advice save money.

According to Ernest Doku, technology expert at price comparison site uSwitch.com, many consumers do not realise they are paying too much for their phones until they have already settled into a contract.

He said: "With some phones, I'd advise that it's sometimes better to maybe opt for an 18 month contract - you have to pay some money up front.

"If you look over the course of about two years or 18 months, you're actually saving by paying up front for the device and paying a smaller tariff in the long run."

Therefore, Brits including those with debt problems, may like to shop around for the best mobile tariffs rather than choosing one which offers a free phone as this can cost more in the long run.

Mr Doku made these comments after the national Billmonitor report revealed that 76 per cent of UK mobile subscribers are on the wrong tariff, wasting on average £194.71 each over the year.
