Majority of consumers fail to notify bank of debt problems

Majority of consumers fail to notify bank of debt problems

- Wednesday, 1 September 2010

Nearly 70 per cent of people who experience a change in their financial situation fail to notify their bank or building society, which could lead to debt problems.

According to CallCredit Independent Group, consumers could avoid financial difficulties if they told their banks about any stress they may be under.

The firm found that 69 per cent of consumers suffering with money trouble in the past two years did not notify their bank.

A further 38 per cent did nothing to change their circumstances when they first faced financial difficulties.

Graham Lund, managing director of the company, said: "What's particularly concerning is the number of people who fail to make their bank aware of sudden changes in their financial situation."

Furthermore, if a consumer is worried about their finances due to a pay cut, loss of hours or a job, they should inform their bank in order to avoid debt problems.

It was also discovered that only eight per cent of those facing financial uncertainty in the past two years seeked debt advice from the Citizen's Advice Bureau or a charity.

Recently, the Consumer Credit Counselling service revealed that it had witnessed a surge in calls from people in money trouble after bereavement.
