'More should be done' to help families prepare for a new arrival

- Monday, 21 June 2010

More should be done to help expectant parents prepare for the financial challenges involved in having a child, which could cause debt problems.

The Debt Advice Foundation believes that mothers should be given more advice on how to budget for a family and cope with the financial changes.

David Rodger, managing director of the Foundation, said: "We are all too aware of the stress that problem debts create; if action could be taken early to help parents avoid debt and learn to cope financially this would make a genuine difference."

"With all the excitement that a baby brings it's easy to bury your head in the sand about debt - but unfortunately this simply makes the problem worse."

He added that his charity had seen an increase in debt problems throughout the UK in the last year.

Antenatal classes could hand out advice about budgeting for a new baby and employers could offer family budgeting training for their staff to help combat the problem, Mr Rodgers suggested.

uSwitch.com found that 41 per cent of new mums end up in debt while on maternity leave – the average amount owed is more than £1,000.
