More work experience for youngsters could help economy

More work experience for youngsters could help economy

- Friday, 20 August 2010

Companies should be encouraged to offer paid internships to youngsters as it could help get out of a cycle of unemployment.

If young people are given the opportunity to work and gain experience, they could find a job which will stop them getting into debt problems in later life.

According to the Prince's Trust, giving businesses incentives to take disadvantaged youths on an internship will benefit the economy and unemployed youngsters.

Ginny Lunn, director of policy and development at the Prince's Trust, believes that internships can help unemployed youngsters to become employable.

She said: "Encouraging employers with cash incentives will open doors for young people which would otherwise remain closed.

"The recent recession has hit young people hardest, with the backlog of unemployed graduates pushing those with fewer qualifications and no experience further from the jobs."

Therefore, a paid internship could help young people living on benefits find a job and possibly prevent them from developing debt problems.

Independent think tank Demos proposed on August 17th that businesses should be given between £1,000 and £5,000 for every intern who finds employment within 12 months.
