Mortgage arrears charges increase debt advice needs
Mortgage arrears charges increase debt advice needs
- Wednesday, 12 August 2009A number of consumers are seeking
debt advice from their mortgage lenders as a result of charges implemented by the very same companies.
Borrowers who are struggling financially and failing to make adequate payments are being hit with mortgage arrears charges and subsequently paying their creditor for advice on how best to combat the debt, according to moneysupermarket.com.
Hannah Skenfield, mortgage channel manager for the website, said that such a system was "outrageous" and "disgraceful".
She said: "It's outrageous that borrowers who are already struggling and who have fallen behind with their mortgage repayments are being hit with such high fees.
"Obviously lenders aren't charities, but no one wins if they continue to burden customers with more fees and debt."
She went on to say that owing to the banks bailout, the situation was a particularly "bitter pill to swallow".
People struggling with mortgage arrears charges could consider speaking to an independent
debt advice service.
