New EC regulations could prevent debt problems
New EC regulations could prevent debt problems
- Friday, 2 July 2010New European Commission (EC) regulations about using a mobile phone on the continent, which came into force yesterday, could reduce the risk of hefty bills and
debt problems.
However, new regulations by the EC could help consumers avoid racking up huge bills when they use their mobiles in Europe.
The regulations include a reduction on the cost of making a call in the EU to 32p a minute and receiving a voicemail will be free of charge.
Ed Vaizey, minister for communications, has welcomed the introduction of cheaper calls within Europe.
He said: "As people set off on holiday abroad it is great to know that the cost of mobile calls home from European countries will be cheaper than ever.
"No longer will unsuspecting tourists and business travellers be stung by an extortionate bill when they return home."
uSwitch.com found that 32 per cent of consumers had been shocked by a large phone bill when they returned home from abroad, which could lead to
debt problems if it is not paid.
