Not clearing debt problems fast enough was one of the biggest regrets in 2010

- Tuesday, 4 January 2011

At least 82 per cent of Brits are unhappy with the amount of loan and credit card debt that they have.

That is according to the latest survey by first direct, which also found that 53 per cent of consumers regretted not paying off their debt problems fast enough in 2010.

Other financial regrets of 2010 included not saving for retirement early enough (37 per cent), spending too much on Christmas and presents (18 per cent).

Richard Brown, senior savings product manager at first direct, said: "Ensuring that you plan ahead with your finances is extremely important.

"Paying off debts quickly where possible prevents interest charges from rising and rising."

It was also found that 74 per cent of consumers would like to change their saving habits and another 60 per cent would like to alter their spending patterns.

According to Jasmine Birtles, founder of moneymagpie.co.uk, people are becoming more open about their debt problems, which is one positive that can be taken from the recession.
