Older people 'should be encouraged to seek debt advice online'

- Friday, 21 May 2010

The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) is concerned that older generations are missing out on debt advice because they are wary of using the internet.

CCCS revealed an increase to 153,000 in the number of consumers using its online service to find solutions to debt problems, possibly due to the anonymity it provides.

However only three per cent of those who used the service were aged over 60 and its thought that the fear of the internet will prevent the older generation from seeking help before their situation gets worse.

Paula Searle, head of e-services at CCCS, said: "Although people should seek help in the medium where they are most comfortable, I am concerned that older people should not miss out on any of our services."

Furthermore the debt charity is planning to highlight the benefits of its online service to older people on Silver Surfers' Day (May 21st).

Silver Surfers' Day is designed to encourage over 55s to get online and face their fears. Some 1,500 events are being held across the UK which will teach basic online skills such as email and finding information on the internet.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19792255-ADNFCR
