Only 21% of women saving for retirement
- Friday, 12 March 2010Debt management may help those women who are failing to adequately save for their retirement, it has been claimed.
Just 21 per cent of women are saving for retirement, and only 13 per cent are confident that their retirement income will be sufficient to meet their future needs, new research from Defaqto reveals.
What's more, 78 per cent will be relying on a state pension, and 22 per cent on their partner's pension.
Commenting on the figures, Defaqto wealth management consultant Matt Ward said: "The pension's gender gap is well known and further underlined by our findings.
"A professional makeover or 'well check' for mums on retirement planning may therefore provide an astute and practical gift from forward thinking offspring this Mother's Day," he added.
Laura Goodman, director of corporate communications at Rockingham Retirement, recently stated that more emphasis needs to be placed on the importance for women to save towards their future.
"I think women tend to leave [pensions] to the men and advertising is always really geared towards males so there is not enough awareness out there for women [about the] importance of this," she said.
