'Overpay on credit card' to manage debt
'Overpay on credit card' to manage debt
- Thursday, 28 May 2009Making overpayments on credit cards has been suggested as a means of
debt management.
Price comparison website moneysupermarket.com pointed out that paying back more than the minimum required amount every month cuts interest charges as well as reducing the duration of the debt.
It advised people to set up overpayments by direct debit.
According to the site's calculations, someone owing £1,000 with an APR of 16.9 per cent will accrue £151.74 of interest if they make two per cent minimum repayments.
But repaying five per cent each month cuts the interest by £30 as well as reducing the debt by significantly more.
Carers UK Emily Holzhausen recently pointed out that carers are at risk from debt as they lose income by taking responsibility to care for someone and also need to make calls to stay in contact.
Speaking in support of the Terminate the Rate mobile phone campaign, she said many carers suffer from debt.
