Parents supporting adult children may need debt help

Parents supporting adult children may need debt help

- Wednesday, 17 February 2010

The soaring cost of supporting adult children could lead many parents to engage in debt management plans.

Findings from The Children's Mutual study indicate that the average cost of supporintg an 18 to 30-year-old, referred to as Young Unwitting Costly Kids (YUCKIES), could exceed £30,000.

Almost three in ten parents either plan to or have already remortgaged their home to help fund their adult children, with more than half of all parents borrowing to help them cope with the added costs.

Chief executive of The Children's Mutual David White said the figures revealed the "stark reality" of the cost associated with being a parent.

"No longer does turning 18 mean financial independence - in fact 16 per cent of parents questioned expected their child to remain financially dependent on them into their thirties and beyond," he said.

"These figures give us a very clear warning - children aren't financially independent at 18 and parents need to plan for this to save their whole family's financial future."

Meanwhile, research from the Daycare Trust reveals that the cost of childcare has risen above the rate of inflation, with the cost of a nursery place for those over two-years-old rising by 5.1 per cent.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19620157-ADNFCR
