Parking fines to increase consumer debt?

Parking fines to increase consumer debt?

- Thursday, 26 November 2009

A number of UK councils have increased parking fine levels while most of the industry has maintained prices.

At a time when many consumers are struggling to cope financially, the decision has been met with criticism.

Those who are not managing to stay in control of their debts but need to drive - and therefore park - on a regular basis could find that they come to rely on debt help in the future.

Luke Kelly, managing director at Park Let, the UK's largest parking space letting agency, said councils were taking advantage of what was essentially a captive audience.

He commented: "Many of these councils who are profiteering from parking fines will also be able to hike the prices at their car parks due to supply and demand.

"It seems unfair that whilst the general parking industry has witnessed zero parking rate inflation, some councils … deem it appropriate to increase parking fines."

The Taxpayers' Alliance revealed that £328 million worth of parking fines has been collected by councils in 2008/09.
