Pay off credit card debt 'as soon as you can'

Pay off credit card debt 'as soon as you can'

- Wednesday, 22 April 2009

People need to pay off their debts - particularly those which have been gained on a credit card - "as soon as they possibly can", according to the Liberal Democrats.

Lord Oakeshott, the party's spokesperson for the treasury, stated that some credit card customers have been hit by "extortionate" interest rates in the "high teens" and this could lead to long-term debt problems.

He added that these rates could have a destructive influence on a person's financial health "just like 50 cigarettes a day or 50 drinks a week".

According to debt management charity Credit Action, consumer borrowing via unsecured personal loans, overdrafts, credit cards and other finance deals stood at an average of £4,840 per adult in the UK by February 2009.

It is thought that 20.3 million purchases are made on plastic cards - including debit and credit cards - in the UK each day and that the total value of such transactions amounts to £1.02 billion.

People struggling to pay back what they owe may wish to seek out credit card debt advice or investgate other debt management strategies - such as an individual voluntary arrangement.
