People becoming 'savvier' in terms of debt management

People becoming 'savvier' in terms of debt management

- Tuesday, 5 January 2010

Consumers are becoming more confident in terms of debt management, new research has found.

New figures by Santander Cards indicate that one in ten Brits plan to transfer debt between credit cards during the first three months of the year, shifting an average of £1,140 each.

In total the research estimates that 4.5 million people will transfer a total of £3.2 billion between credit cards in the first quarter of 2010, as they seek to take advantage of zero per cent introductory offers.

Santander Cards director Emma Roberts said the number of people transferring balances had increased year on year, whilst the amount being transferred had fallen "dramatically".

"This is clear sign that consumers are becoming savvier when it comes to managing their finances," she added.

Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics indicated that the average UK household saved 8.6 per cent of their income in the three months to September last year, the highest level for any quarter in over a decade.
