Potential of debt advice highlighted by armed forces programme

Potential of debt advice highlighted by armed forces programme

- Friday, 11 December 2009

The usefulness of debt advice in solving financial problems has been highlighted by a scheme set up to help armed forces personnel and their families.

The Benefits and Money Advice Service, which was set up in December 2007, has helped more than 8,100 people and addressed in excess of 37,000 issues, according to the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

It is believed that those who have used the system are collectively £19.2 million better off.

The system is funded by the Royal British Legion and the RAF Benevolent Fund, with the majority of the system's advisors based with the CAB.

Sir Rob Wright, controller of the RAF Benevolent Fund, said that the importance of the scheme was magnified by the recession.

He commented: "It's immensely gratifying to see how many people the Benefits and Money Advice caseworkers have helped in such a short period of time.

"The economic downturn is only adding to the pressures on veterans and serving families."

The CAB recently criticised the way in which cancer patients' benefit claims were being handled by the authorities.
