Prevent debt problems occurring due to burglary
- Monday, 24 May 2010Precautions should be taken to prevent burglaries and home insurance should be taken out to avoid facing the resulting financial burden, it has been suggested.
Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks revealed that uninsured victims of burglary are facing an annual bill of £200 million. The financial cost of such a theft could lead to serious
debt problems for consumers who do not take the right steps to protect themselves.
Around one in four homes have no contents insurance and one in three have no buildings cover which could leave as many as six million households footing the cost of the burglary themselves.
Steve Reid, retail director at Clydesdale Bank, said: "It makes sense to take precautions to prevent burglaries from happening in the first case. But security measures are not fool-proof and you can still fall victim to a determined burglar.
"Adequate home contents insurance can't stop the crime from happening but it can ease the burden should the worst happen."
Precautions that could be taken include double deadlocks, window locks and outdoor or indoor sensor lights.
Clydesdale Bank is currently offering half price home insurance that covers consumers' contents for up to £50,000 and includes automatic buildings cover of up to £400,000.
