Renters worried about eviction due to debt problems

Renters worried about eviction due to debt problems

- Friday, 25 June 2010

The number of consumers fearing eviction from their property because they have debt problems and cannot afford the rent has increased.

That is according to the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS), which has witnessed a surge in the number of renters seeking debt help as they fear eviction.

Previously, it was homeowners rather than those in privately rented or social housing contacting the charity for advice on how to avoid eviction.

Laura Carver, CCCS helpline manager, said: "While we have always had more people in rented accommodation calling for help with their debts, they have usually been able to maintain their rent payments.

"This suggests that the personal finance situation for those in rented accommodation is deteriorating to the extent that they many end up homeless."

The charity advises renters to ensure they pay off priority outstanding finance such as rent before any non-priority debts.

Renters could face more financial difficulty due to the cuts made in the emergency Budget on June 22nd.

Chancellor George Osborne announced that housing benefit will be capped to £280 a week for a one-bedroomed property and £400 a week for houses with four bedrooms or more.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19858026-ADNFCR
