'Savvy' approach needed to eliminate credit card debt

'Savvy' approach needed to eliminate credit card debt

- Wednesday, 13 January 2010

People seeking new deals when trying to eliminate credit card debt should consider all their options, an organisation has claimed.

Moneysupermarket.com states that in the current market, consumers are finding it difficult to access the best credit card deals, with only four out of ten applications accepted.

In light of this consumers should check their credit rating, create a debt repayment plan, and check they can actually transfer their balance to a new provider.

People who cannot afford to repay debt on a zero per cent deal should consider switching to a low rate credit card, claims the organisation.

Credit cards expert at moneysupermarket.com Peter Harrison said people needed to be "savvy" when tackling their existing debts, and that the best approach was largely dependant on credit rating and how much is able to be repaid each month.

"People need to be aware that even if they are accepted for a good product now, there is no guarantee this will be the case in a year's time, as such careful planning is required to ensure credit card debts are cleared in the most efficient way possible," he added.

A recent poll by lovemoney.com revealed that the leading financial priority for people in 2010 was clearing credit card debts, followed by a focus on savings.
