Scottish students less worried about debt problems than English counterparts

- Thursday, 15 July 2010

Scottish students are less worried about accumulating debt problems in order to go to university than their English counterparts, reports News.Scotsman.com.

An annual survey by the Association of Investment Companies found that Scottish students expected to graduate with few debt problems but were worried about finding a job.

Only seven per cent of Scottish university leavers expected to graduate with debts of more than £20,000 compared to 34 per cent across the UK. This is possibly a result of not having to pay tuition fees.

The Scottish government said: "Today's (July 15th) figures once again show that Scotland's graduates are leaving university burdened with far less debt that their counterparts elsewhere in the UK.

"That is why we scrapped the graduate endowment and the reason why we have ruled out a return to tuition fees."

Vince Cable announced today that English graduates will repay the cost of their degree when they start working through a graduate tax.

The government will give tuition fees directly to the university instead of lending it to students.
