Secure sheds during summer holidays and prevent debt problems

Secure sheds during summer holidays and prevent debt problems

- Tuesday, 22 June 2010

During the summer months thefts from sheds and the garden increase so it is wise to secure them before going on holiday in order to avoid possible debt problems.

If an expensive item such as a mountain bike is stolen and the consumer has no insurance, the cost of replacing it could lead to debt problems.

According to Aviva, thefts from outside the home increase by 60 per cent in July and August compared to January.

Jonathan Cracknell, household underwriter at Aviva, said: "Most homeowners are pretty savvy when it comes to securing their main home while they are away, but it's easy to forget that garden tools, expensive children's toys, bikes and lawnmowers all make rich pickings for opportunist thieves."

He suggests leaving a car in the drive, not leaving wheelie bins out and getting a timed device that puts lights on in the morning and evening to give the impression that someone is at home.

A garden shed enthusiast and blogger, Uncle Wilco, thinks it is easy to secure outdoor buildings by investing in a good padlock.
