Sensible spending could reduce UK debt problems

Sensible spending could reduce UK debt problems

- Thursday, 3 December 2009

A number of Britons intend to spend less money this Christmas, it has been revealed.

According to Saga, the UK's elderly plan on spending a fifth less on their grandchildren this Christmas, with only 13 per cent expecting to use their savings.

Furthermore, the overall cost of this year's holiday season will be 35 per cent cheaper than a decade ago.

People's decision to spend less coupled with the fact that Christmas is expected to be cheaper than in 1999 could mean that fewer Britons experience debt problems this year.

It is suggested that the fall in spending is a direct result of the recession, with people reacting to the altered financial climate and not spending more than they can afford.

However, Saga also reveals that the number of people intending to pay for Christmas on credit cards remains at 16 per cent, with 28 per cent of this number planning to pay the balance back straight away or after their next paycheque.

More than half (52 per cent) of people will pay for Christmas with their regular wage.
