'Six in ten' eliminate credit card debt

'Six in ten' eliminate credit card debt

- Thursday, 7 May 2009

As many as 60 per cent of UK cardholders manage debt on credit cards effectively, according to Apacs figures published by Halifax.

However, Halifax adds that more than 200,000 individuals could be unaware of their partners' attempts to eliminate credit card debt on a monthly basis.

This is the figure placed on the number of people who have a credit card they are hiding from their partner.

And the research found that many people are using such "secret cards" to disguise other debt that they have run up.

Others are not using secret cards to manage debt, but to buy items for themselves that they do not want their loved one to know about.

Adrian Bryant, head of marketing for Halifax Credit Cards, says: "It's important that people are honest about their finances with their partner as it may affect their ability to secure products in joint names."

Statistics from Apacs - which processes credit and debit card payments in the UK - show that spending on credit grew by two per cent in 2008.

However, debit card purchases increased by 9.5 per cent over the same period.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19156996-ADNFCR
