'Stealth tax' could increase consumer debt problems

'Stealth tax' could increase consumer debt problems

- Wednesday, 4 November 2009

The return to 17.5 per cent VAT could have an impact upon the number of people who struggle financially and are forced to seek debt advice.

The end-of-year tax increase has been condemned by a number of industry officials, with the Taxpayers Alliance (TA) recently adding their name to the list of concerned parties.

Matthew Sinclair, research director for the TA, said that there were better alternatives to the resumption of past VAT tax levels.

He commented: "We need tax cuts not tax hikes and that absolutely includes rises in VAT. VAT is a stealth tax and they are putting up [VAT] on a huge amount of people's shopping priorities."

Mr Sinclair went on to say that the TA believed there should be "serious cuts" in spending in order to reduce the "burden on taxpayers".

The TA's comments follow a recent report from the European Commission which called on governments across the continent to do more to tackle VAT fraud within their countries.
