Student accommodation prices increase

Student accommodation prices increase

- Tuesday, 10 August 2010

Students are facing a price hike in their accommodation and could pay more than £100 a week, which may cause debt problems.

Over the last year alone, prices for student accommodation have increased by 4.3 per cent, new research from Accommodation for Students has found.

Furthermore, those going to university may have to borrow more money in order to pay for their housing, which can lead to debt problems in the future.

Students in London will be faced with the largest bills for housing as prices can be as much as £102 a week, while the national average is £65 a week.

Simon Thompson, the website's director, told the Telegraph: "Minimum down payments for buy-to-let mortgages are now 20 to 25 per cent.

"With more equity now tied up in their properties many landlords have been forced to increase rent in order to make a return on investment."

Endsleigh, a provider of student insurance, warned those going to university to protect their valuables from theft. The average student is expected to take £4,000 worth of valuables to university with them.
