Students advised to change attitude towards money to avoid debt problems

Students advised to change attitude towards money to avoid debt problems

- Wednesday, 15 December 2010

Students have been advised to budget their money and find work while at university to ensue they do not require debt help in the future.

Steve Burford, student money expert from wealthystudent.co.uk, which gives advice to students about managing their money, made these suggestions.

He said: "It's imperative that they start thinking about money much more - down to every pound that they spend. They should make strict budgets and not exceed their weekly amount.

"One of our top tips is to get that amount of money out of the cash machine at the beginning of the week and do not take your card anywhere, especially on a night out."

Students should also consider finding part-time work when they are university in order to fund their lifestyle and help them avoid debt problems.

Mr Burford made these recommendations after Which? revealed that students have been overcharged £15 million by the Student Loan Company after excess re-payments were taken from their accounts despite paying off their loan in full.
