Students could benefit from greater debt advice
- Friday, 4 September 2009UK students could benefit from improved levels of
debt advice, after research revealed a widespread unawareness of costs incurred during study.
According to HM Revenues and Customs (HMRC), more than half of Britain's 2.3 million students are unaware that they have to pay tax on earnings during education.
With three-quarters of studiers now undertaking part-time work, this figure is of concern to student advice group UNIAID, which also highlights TV licensing and council tax exemption forms as other areas of worry.
Jemma Samuels, programme director for UNIAID and the Brightside Trust said: "As students move away from home they are confronted with a succession of financial responsibilities."
"Students
have to learn to deal with the day to day realities of independent living. This includes
understanding your personal tax status as a student."
Acoording to HMRC, many students who earn under £6,475 could claim back the tax accrued.
