Students 'need to protect property from theft'

Students 'need to protect property from theft'

- Thursday, 5 August 2010

The average student is planning to take £4,000 worth of possessions with them to university and if they become a victim of theft, they could get into debt problems.

If a student has to replace their laptop, which can cost over £500, because it is stolen or broken, they could get into debt problems if they do not have spare cash.

Endsleigh found that 94 per cent of students were planning to take their laptop to university and other expensive items such as mobiles and mp3 players.

The student insurance provider also found that youngsters could be carrying more than £1,300 worth of items around with them on campus or in town due to books, watches and electronic equipment.

Aaron Porter, NUS president, said: "Taking precautions against theft and damage can provide you with valuable peace of mind and ensure that you are not left out of pocket at a time when money can be particularly tight."

Graduates should also shop around for the best bank accounts available that could help with debt by not charging high interest on overdrafts, suggested moneyfacts.co.uk.ADNFCR-2300-ID-800013901-ADNFCR
