Students are underestimating how much their items are worth and if they are not insured, they could get into debt problems.

That is because their valuables could get stolen and without adequate insurance, they will have to replace the objects themselves, which may lead to debt problems.

According to the British Insurers Brokers' Association (BIBA), items such as laptops, mobiles and iPods can all add up to a large amount of money.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at BIBA, said: "People have a lot of stuff and you have got to make sure that you just add it all up.

"It doesn't take long; you can do a quick check and your insurance broker can help talk you through it to make sure you have covered everything."

Furthermore, parent's home insurance can also be extended to cover the student's contents while they are away, he added.

Marks and Spencer Money revealed on September 13th that the average university student bedroom contains £1,620 worth of valuables and that 27 per cent of students have been burgled.
