Students should insure their valuables while at university

Students should insure their valuables while at university

- Friday, 1 October 2010

Students should make sure their valuables are insured as they can add up to lots of money and replacing them could cause debt problems.

That is because the items could be stolen from student accommodation and if the objects are not covered by an insurance policy, it may cost a lot to replace them.

A spokesperson for the British Insurance Brokers' Association said: "They might have an electric guitar, a CD collection [or] a laptop.

"Nowadays people have iPods, iPads, iPhones and designer clothes and it can add up to a lot of money."

Some items are not insured when the student is living in halls of residence so it is worth checking their parent's home insurance policy as it may cover their goods, he added.

If not, the student should obtain their own insurance so that they will be covered if the items are stolen and can be replaced at no added cost to the youngster.

Santander revealed on September 25th, that students in the UK keep £3.3 billion worth of goods in their accommodation and £1.7 billion of this is uninsured.
