The threshold before someone thinks they have debt problems has increased

The threshold before someone thinks they have debt problems has increased

- Wednesday, 12 January 2011

Britons now only consider themselves to need debt help once they are over £15,000 in debt, according to Scottish Provident.

The firm found that the debt threshold increases for those aged between 18 and 34 as they will only consider themselves to have debt problems when they are in £16,646 worth of financial arrears.

This increase in the debt threshold has been attributed to the tough economic climate and a change in attitude about what is manageable personal debt.

Susan Barclay, head of marketing at Scottish Provident, said: "What starts out as a small level of personal debt can quickly spiral out of control, so Britons should ensure they keep on top of their personal spending."

They could also seek debt advice if they are concerned about their money problems but just 26 per cent of those surveyed would go to the Citizen's Advice Bureau to get help, it was found.

David Rodger, managing director of the Debt Advice Foundation, recently advised consumers to seek debt help sooner rather than later.
