Those worried about credit card debt could set up a direct debit for payments

Those worried about credit card debt could set up a direct debit for payments

- Friday, 18 March 2011

Brits worried about debt problems through using a credit card may like to set up a direct debit to ensure they do not make late payments on their bills.

Such is the suggestion of Michelle Whiteman, a spokesperson for the UK Cards Association, which is the trade association for the UK card industry.

She said: "Setting up a direct debit for at least the minimum repayment is a sensible idea as it helps you to avoid any late payment fees."

In this way, Brits can ensure that their credit card debt does not increase as they will not be faced with additional charges.

Ms Whiteman also advised consumers to repay their balance in full each month, as this will ensure they take full advantage of the benefits associated with credit cards without paying much interest.

Financial Fraud Action UK recently stated that credit card fraud, which could cause debt problems, has decreased but there are still things that consumers can do to prevent this from happening to them.

These include keeping a PIN secret and not writing it down and shielding a PIN from other people when withdrawing cash.
