Two in three motorists may drive dangerously

- Thursday, 12 August 2010

A new survey by Sainsbury's Finance has found that two in three motorists admit to having engaged in a dangerous activity while driving.

If an accident occurs and the driver has no car insurance, the repairs could cause them to get into debt problems.

The most common dangerous habit was eating or drinking behind the wheel with 38 per cent of those questioned admitting they had done so in the past month.

Another one in nine motorists stated they had used their mobile phone while driving in the past month and six per cent had sent a text message.

Ben Tyte, Sainsbury's car insurance manager, said: "Simple actions like eating or drinking behind the wheel or driving with flip flops on can significantly increase the risk of you having an accident, so we would urge motorists to focus on their driving and not be tempted to engage in anything that may distract them."

Motorists could decrease their chances of getting into debt problems by taking out adequate car insurance that will cover the costs of any repairs that may have to be made.

Consumers can get a ten per cent discount on Sainsbury's car insurance if it is purchased online and the AA is offering cheap cover to learner drivers.
