UKCA supports Which? campaign into card surcharges

UKCA supports Which? campaign into card surcharges

- Friday, 11 February 2011

The UK Cards Association (UKCA) has pledged its support to the Which? campaign against excessive surcharges on purchases made using credit and debit cards.

Melanie Johnson, chair of the organisation, urged the government to ensure that excessive surcharging for card payments is curbed through regulation.

She said: "It is high time customers are given a voice where the true cost of what they are buying is made clear to them."

People requiring debt help as a result of their credit card bills may feel that excessive surcharges are an added hindrance, with Which? revealing airlines, local authorities and estate agents among the worst offenders.

Surcharges are supposed to cover the costs incurred by retailers when they process card transactions.

However, Which? claims that some retailers are abusing the process, with some airlines charging customers on a per-passenger, per-journey basis, even if only one payment needs to be processed.

Consumer Focus has also given its full backing to the campaign.ADNFCR-2300-ID-800400319-ADNFCR
