Unemployed 'should claim benefits as a gateway to support services'

- Monday, 15 November 2010

Consumers living with debt problems who have recently lost their job should not be ashamed to sign up for benefits.

That is because these benefits can be a gateway to other support services, which may prevent consumers from getting into further debt problems.

According to Tim Nichols, press and parliamentary liaison officer at the Child Action Poverty Group, job centres have changed over the last few years to become more welcoming.

He said: "There have been a lot of changes to the way that job centres work over the years, for the most part they are more welcoming places than they have been in the past.

"Being on a benefit is the gateway to some support services that kick in after your claim has worked a certain length of time and the later you leave it to make that claim, the later you will have access to some of those services"

Mr Nichols made these comments following a report from totaljobs.com, which found that there are nearly half a million unemployed people aged over 25 who are not claiming Jobseeker's Allowance.
