Using a reward credit card could help those with debt problems

Using a reward credit card could help those with debt problems

- Wednesday, 8 December 2010

Using a reward credit card could help those with debt problems combat the VAT rise in January.

According to Stuart McKeggie, head of cards at Sainsbury's Finance, the VAT rise will affect every household and may influence a consumer's decision about making large purchases.

He suggested: "If you are making any big credit card purchases, regardless of whether or not they're exempt from VAT, shoppers should make sure that they are making their card work for them and getting a reward every time they shop."

In this way consumers, including those with debt problems, can ensure that they get something back for spending their money, whether it be cashback or nectar points.

Mr McKeggie made these suggestions following Acxiom's Affordability Report, which found that the average UK household will lose £225 a year due to the VAT increase to 20 per cent.

This figure could even rise to £448 a year for some households, with married pensioners and married couples with grown-up children expected to be hit the worst.
