Voluntary repossession could be 'the sensible option'

Voluntary repossession could be 'the sensible option'

- Tuesday, 17 August 2010

Voluntary repossessions could be the most sensible option for some people trying to cope with debt problems.

Chris Jenkins, co-owner of the Homeowners Advice Centre, believes that if all other solutions have been tried, considering voluntary repossession could be an option.

He said: "Struggling with mortgage payments month in month out can have a massive effect on a family both in terms of their standard of living and psychologically."

Mr Jenkins also warned consumers that this should be the last resort and can be avoided if debt help is sought before the situation gets worse.

People should not bury their heads in the sand and should talk to their mortgage providers, housing advice centres or their landlords before they get into financial arrears, he added.

On August 12th, the Department for Communities and Local Government revealed that the main reasons that people fell behind on mortgage repayments was due to reduced earnings from employment, a relationship breakdown or failed self employment.
